MSGR Reloaded

Chat like it's 2005

MSGR Reloaded is a free chat app with the look and feel of the instant messengers you grew up with. Your contact list, nudges, emoticons and display pictures are all here, on a server that's switched on again.

What is it?

MSGR Reloaded is a throwback to MSN Messenger, the chat program that a lot of us kept open every evening in the 2000s. Microsoft shut the service down in 2013, and with it went the contact lists, the nudges and the agonising over a personal message.

We rebuilt that experience from scratch. The app, the server, every icon and every emoticon were made new for this project. None of it is Microsoft's, and it isn't connected to Microsoft in any way. Old MSN accounts don't carry over, so you and your friends make new ones here.

What you can do

  • Keep a contact list. Sort friends into groups and see who's Online, Away, Busy or Be Right Back, with their personal messages beside their names.
  • Chat the old way. Emoticons, your own font and colour, a "typing" indicator, and nudges that shake your friend's window.
  • Pick a display picture and a conversation background, animated ones included. Your friend sees both.
  • Send files by dragging them into a conversation. Between two MSGR Reloaded users, files go straight from one computer to the other when they can.
  • Leave a message for someone who's offline. They'll get it the next time they sign in.
  • Look back through your saved conversations. History stays on your own computer and you can search it.
  • Add your Discord friends on a separate tab, if you'd like everyone in one list. This is optional.

Not there yet: group conversations, voice and video calls, voice clips, games and custom emoticons. They're on the list.

Help keep the server on

MSGR Reloaded is free, with no ads and nothing to buy, and it's made in our spare time. The server and the domain cost money every month. If you'd like to chip in, a coffee goes a long way. It's entirely optional and doesn't unlock anything.
